Opportunity in the Pickleball Market
Pickleball's Next Frontier: Overcoming Challenges with Innovation and Community
Despite the hot market temperature, individuals of all age groups playing the sport, and diverse celebrity attention, some gaps exist in the market and ecosystem. We at Picklezone not only will curb these problems but also act as a catalyst to strengthen the Pickleball sport like never before.
Challenge I: Lack of Strong Community
Pickleball is flying at warp speed. Embraced by most. Applauded by all. However, it needs to have a strong community around itself for it to go far and beyond its geographical borders.
“Instead of drifting along like a leaf in a river, understand who you are and how you come across to people and what kind of an impact you have on the people around you and the community around you and the world, so that when you go out, you can feel you have made a positive difference.” – Jane Fonda
With reference to the above quote from Jane Fonda, the importance of having a robust community for Pickleball cannot be stressed enough. For this sport to have a wider reach and scope, having a strong community is crucial.
However, Pickleball has yet to have a comprehensive app or platform that truly brings the community together from all walks of life. There is an absence of a centralized platform for community interaction, sharing experiences, learning, growing the sport, conducting commerce, and earning PICKLES.
This is an important challenge to address because no sport can keep flying at a high pace if it is backed by a fractured community.
Challenge II: Lack of Content Creation
Content development is critical for any industry because it gives a voice to a brand or initiative. The content creators are no less than brand ambassadors who are responsible for sharing and disseminating information, engaging the community, and strengthening relationships.
Creating Pickleball content can attract more players to join the movement and strengthen the community, united by their shared love for the game and their unwavering commitment to making Pickleball an inclusive and rewarding experience for all.
However, looking at the current market scenario, we have observed a lack of content creators and a centralized platform like the Pickleball ecosystem. Although there are many notable Pickleball content creators- Sydney Stienaker, Michele — thepickleyogi, Kim and Penn Holderness, Shea Underwood, and many more; their reach is quite limited.
To have a deeper impact, the process of content creation in Pickleball should be made easy, allowing anyone the opportunity and platform to create and share the content. A platform with fewer barricades is the need of the hour.
Challenge III: Lack of Training Environment
Pickleball is spreading like wildfire, but for more people to be involved, it is important to have a training ecosystem followed by learning resources that are easy to access and inexpensive. This will expand the adoption of the sport and will ensure that the wildfire is never settled.
However, the current training ecosystem is limited to YouTube tutorials, blogs, and articles. It is because of the scarcity of Pickleball courts and trainers, hence, giving no other options to the common folks but to resort to digital training that is not effective because there is no real physical movement or simulation.
Challenge IV: Lack of Reward Opportunities
Opportunities to earn rewards should not be concentrated in the hands of the few. In the case of Pickleball, it is limited to professional players, experienced trainers, and social media influencers.
To enhance maximum participation and involvement in the sport, it is necessary to have an infrastructure that can allow even a newcomer in the Pickleball community to earn the rewards.
For example, someone who is new to the game and is provided with monetary rewards after every win will not only magnify their confidence but will also motivate the players to strive for even greater achievements. This will also build a competitive environment for the sport while attracting more participation and building a rock-solid community.
Challenge V: Lack of IoT Capabilities
Pickleball is a growing sport, but it still lacks IoT (Internet of Things) performance-tracking capabilities that would allow a player to measure, assess, and improve his/her sport performance.
If a player wants to identify and trace the areas of improvement, then how will he/she collect the required insight? The IoT integration in the Pickleball solved this massive challenge to measure the every move of a player through the IoT integration that collects all the necessary performance stats of a player.
We believe that the stats collected through IoT integration will help the players collect important data that can help them in identifying their strengths and weaknesses, hence, paving a path for them to have an improved sport performance and effective training strategy.
For example, if a player has a low first serve percentage, they can focus on improving their serve accuracy. This IoT driven data can also be used to set goals and stay motivated. For example, a player can set a goal to increase their win percentage by 10% in one month.
Challenge VI: Lack of Social Cause Machinery
Having a social cause machinery is essential for building a stronger ecosystem and trusting relationship. Beyond that, initiatives for the social cause are no less than a celebration that brings the community together. However, the Pickleball ecosystem is yet to have robust social cause machinery that can empower and inspire everyone, irrespective of his or her financial background to champion the sport.
Challenge VII: Lack of Court Availability
The paucity of Pickleball courts has created a lot of problems for many amateur players to land themselves an opportunity to hone their Pickleball skills. Many times players are not aware of the courts available to them in their area.
In many cases, even after finding the court, the players have to wait for a long time to start playing since the courts are already full most of the time.
“The one thing I have noticed sadly with any kind of growth is that there are growing pains. Initially, when I was playing, everyone was trying to get new people to play pickleball. The longer you have to wait for a court, the harder it is to be patient for a player that’s just starting, especially when all the other players are higher-level players” said Beth Brooks, a California pickleball player.
Challenge VIII: Lack of Reliable Sources of Information
Pickleball is an emerging sport, exploding like a volcano and flowing as fast as Amazon.
However, the ecosystem still doesn’t have a reliable source of information that can help the players, especially beginners to keep themselves updated on everything that is happening around Pickleball, rules, regulations, upgrades, guidance, etc.
Having a reliable intelligence center for Pickleball is extremely important because the growth is sustainable only if the correct information is supplied to the players.
Challenge IX: Lack of Competitive Spirit
Pickleball is a relatively new sport, and as such, it is yet to witness a concrete competitive spirit that is typically found in other sports, such as soccer, baseball, and basketball.
We believe that the competitive spirit can be injected into Pickleball by having an ecosystem that would allow:
Organizing more professional tournaments creating a more structured ranking system while rewarding the players for not only participating but also winning the challenges
Another way to promote competitiveness is to encourage players to challenge themselves and to set goals for themselves. This will be done by creating individual or team goals, or by tracking progress over time.
